At its 77th annual awards Sunday, the BAFTA awards—that would be independent arts charity the British Academy of Film and Television Arts—honored the best in film over the past year. It's an awards ceremony that many in the US will watch with particular interest, as its nominations deviated notably from its arguable American counterpart, the Academy Awards: Barbie only scored five nominations, for example, and Lily Gladstone, who is widely believed to be a frontrunner in the best actress Oscar race, was passed over by the British awards. Though frontrunners like Oppenheimer did very well at this years awards, several wins (and losses) suggest a momentum shift just as Oscars voting begins.
As opposed to most American awards shows in recent years, this year's BAFTAs weren't hosted by a comedian. Instead, actor David Tennant took the stage, joined by performers including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who sang Europe's most played song of 2002: “Murder on the Dancefloor,” which is enjoying a second life as the capper to multiple nominee Saltburn. Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddington also took the mic, performing “Time After Time” for the show's In Memoriam segment.
Below, find a complete list of BAFTA's 2024 nominations with each category winner in bold. We also have coverage of the red carpet (including dapper BAFTA president Prince William), the best looks of the night, and post-ceremony analysis of what the awards suggest for the Oscars race ahead.
